Want to Know More?
The information above captures our formal job description and essential position requirements. Here is an informal description that answers the question, “What would I do as Executive Director of Henry’s Place?”
In a nutshell, your job is to ensure that Henry’s Place accomplishes its mission of changing young lives through camp. Henry’s Place has been running free camp programs for at-risk children for over 10 years and in that time has made a tremendous impact on the lives of youth. As we are a small organization (3 full-time staff, 2 part-time staff, 10 seasonal summer staff, and volunteers), that means you have a lot of responsibilities. Because all of our positions are only one-person deep, even with established divisions of labor we all cover for each other when necessary. You will work at Henry’s Place on a daily basis: on weekdays during the summer-camp season and on a flexible basis during our retreat season (roughly Aug- Apr) when most of our customers are present Friday-Sunday.
You will supervise the Camp Director and the Director of Donor Relations.
- The Camp Director is responsible for on-site operations, facilities, and programming.
- The Executive Director is responsible for ensuring that the organization has the people, funding, partnerships, and strategic direction necessary to fulfill its mission. In simple terms: the Camp Director leads what happens on the property, and the Executive Director ensures the resources and support systems are in place to make that work possible.
- The Director of Donor Relations is responsible for all aspects of fundraising including donor cultivation, grant-seeking, and fundraising events, and you will work closely with her to support and direct her in those efforts.
You will spend a large portion of your time coordinating with staff and with the Board of Directors to ensure that the organization functions at a high level both administratively and financially. This includes:
- Donor development and relationship management
- Board communication and strategic alignment
- Resource planning and financial oversight
- Long-term sustainability and growth planning
In direct support of summer camp operations, you will take a primary role in camper recruiting during the non-camp season and, during camp season, will directly backstop the Camp Director in execution of camp programs when he or his Assistant Camp Director are unavailable, require assistance, or are otherwise occupied. You will also be participating with all aspects of camp as you see appropriate so that you can fulfill your role of being the ultimate authority in ensuring the effectiveness of our mission to change young lives through camp.
During the retreat season (Aug-Apr), you will assist the Camp Director as needed with hosting customers that are renting our facility. We have weekend rental customers on a regular basis, and we also have school groups that rent our facility on most Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the school year.
While your executive roles are your primary duties, because we are a small organization with one-deep positions, you will periodically be called upon to fill direct operational needs that may include:
- Direct supervision of seasonal staff
- Assistance leading camp activities
- Assistance with transportation
- Rental customer assistance
- Assisting with food service
- Assisting with cleaning and facility prep
- Filling in as-needed when contingencies arise (e.g. illness, personnel problems, etc.).
- If formal teaching is in your wheelhouse, you will also have opportunities to teach camp and retreat curricula
Our organization started in Las Vegas, a majority of our Board Members and donors live there, and the vast majority of our campers live there as well. Accordingly, you will live in the Cedar City area where our camp is located and will travel regularly to Las Vegas (expensed to Henry’s Place) to interact with the Board, partner organizations, and to conduct camper recruiting.
